PARTICIPANT HIGHLIGHT – aqsa malik – 2018 PROGRAM
“UGA is a great school and it was fun adjusting to a new campus and meeting new people. The College of Engineering is heavily involved in important research and it was exciting to learn about studies being conducted by professors from different fields. Downtown Athens is also very convenient and fun for shopping and eating out.”
Aqsa Malik, a junior biology student at Emory University, spent this summer conducting research in the UGA College of Engineering as part of our Nanotechnology and Biomedicine REU program. She worked in Dr. Peter Kner’s lab, where she helped create a 3D brain atlas of the zebrafish’s central nervous system and to capture seizure events in the zebrafish’s brain. The study aims to provide new insight into specific neurons and networks during a seizure event in hopes of contributing to the understanding and treatment of Parkinson’s epilepsy.
